The Importance of Buffering Tap Water For Aquariums And Ponds (NEW!)
Tap water passing through pipes from source to consumer becomes anaerobic (lacking oxygen) and this can be a serious problem when directly added to aquariums and ponds. Without oxygen and with the build up of carbon dioxide in the water, the water becomes much more acidic and toxic than it naturally would be. When the water comes out of the tap it immediately starts to release carbon dioxide into the air, and pick up oxygen from the air. This process causes the rapid movement of pH (acidity/alkalinity) in the water back and forth between higher and lower levels of acidity and alkalinity.
If fish (and other aquatic animals) are present in this water as it is rapidly fluttering up and down in pH, the fish (and other aquatic animals) will be severely shocked, and may be killed. It can take minutes to hours for the water to stabilize at its natural pH level. It is important to know that even a change of 0.1 pH higher or lower is a serious change in pH in its effect on fishes and aquatic invertebrates (such as snails, shrimp, and coral reef animals), because it doubles the alkalinity or acidity of the water. For example, a change in pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is 10 times more alkaline than 6.0. See the Kordon Article "The importance of pH in Aquarium and Pond Keeping" for further information on pH.
Kordon has in many of its water conditioners buffers to stop immediately this fluttering of pH, so that the water stabilizes immediately at its natural pH level, whatever that is. This allows the aquarist and pond keeper to put tap water directly into aquariums and ponds containing fishes and other aquatic animals at the same time that they are using the appropriate Kordon products in the water (see list of those products below).
Just be sure that when adding new water that there is not a lag in time when the Kordon products are placed in the water containing fishes and other aquatic animals. This is particularly important for aquariums. The shallower water and wider surfaces exposed to air of most ponds makes them more able quickly to release carbon dioxide and absorb oxygen. But pH fluttering may still be a problem for them, such as at lower water temperatures when the reaction of releasing carbon dioxide from the water and receiving oxygen is slower.
The Kordon products containing pH Buffers are effective when first used, introducing buffering components that boost and maintain acid-neutralizing capacity (alkalinity) of the water. They are stable for the first hours of usage to handle what is coming out in the tap water or other water source. After the initial period to stop the fluttering of pH in the water as it is exposed to air, the Kordon products no longer affect the pH of the water. The water will then be at its natural level of pH.
