U.S. ORGANIZATIONS WITH INTERNET SITES / e-COMMUNICATIONS

AquaNIC Aquaculture Network Information Center
A foremost resource for information on the Internet about aquaculture organizations and activities is AquaNIC. It can be a very useful starting point for searches.  See http://www.aquanic.org/index.htm
"The Aquaculture Network Information Center (AquaNIC) was conceived in 1994 by the former USDA-Extension Service (currently Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service) as one of the nation’s first network information centers to serve as a gateway to the world’s electronic aquaculture resources. AquaNIC was created, through grants from USDA-Extension Service, the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program, and Purdue University Libraries.

"Primary funding of AquaNIC is through the NOAA Sea Grant College Program with secondary support from USDA North Central Regional Aquaculture Center.  In-kind support is provided by the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, Auburn University's Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquaculture, and the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program.  Land Grant institutions, Sea Grant Colleges, the USDA Regional Aquaculture Center Program, and others with an expertise in aquaculture provide significant oversight and contribute to the resource base.  AquaNIC houses or provides links to thousands of state, national, and international aquaculture publications, newsletters, visual media, calendars, job services, directories and specialty sections for species and production systems.

"Vision" - AquaNIC is the gateway to the world’s electronic resources for aquaculture information.

 "Goals"
Provide access to all electronic aquaculture information at the national and international level.
Increase the quantity and quality of electronic information available to the aquaculture industry.
Provide self-paced aquaculture instruction to the aquaculture industry.
Obtain user input in directing AquaNIC services."
[AquaNIC does not duplicate what is presented below, because all listings are not on its web site, and it is not focused as intently on the general topic of Aquaculture Animal Health.]

American Society of Parasitologists
See http://asp.unl.edu/
"About Us"
"The American Society of Parasitologists (ASP) is a diverse group of over 1500 scientists from industry, government, and academia who are interested in the study and teaching of Parasitology. Founded in 1924, ASP members have contributed not only to the development of parasitology as a discipline, but also to primary research in systematics, medicine, molecular biology, immunology, physiology, ecology, biochemistry, behavior, and more.

"The Journal of Parasitology is published bimonthly and includes research articles, brief research notes, announcements of the Society, and book reviews. Articles are subdivided by topic for ease of reference and range from behavior to pathogenesis to systematics. Contributors enjoy rapid turn-around time and broad exposure as over 1400 libraries world-wide subscribe to the Journal. The Journal is recognized for publishing papers that have a long-term impact on the field of Parasitology. The ASP Newsletter is fully electronic, and is published 4 times each year as a pdf file. The newsletter keeps members informed about political initiatives concerning biology, related meetings, employment opportunities, and all things parasitological."

"We routinely send out information to members via the listserv, so if you would like to be added to the list, feel free to ask Beth [Wilkins] to put you on regardless of whether you are a member of ASP or not. Of course we truly appreciate your membership, so feel free to join at any time. We accept checks (made out to American Society of Parasitologists) and all major credit cards except Discover (Allen Press cannot process these for some reason). An application form is available by clicking on either the Members tab of our home page, or on the link below.

"Membership, of course, allows you to receive the Journal of Parasitology, a publication with a very long shelf life. Your library's subscription makes this journal readily available for your students, too, although we also have bargain memberships for first time student subscribers (see application form). The Journal of Parasitology is also available through BioOne and JSTOR, with a floating 3-year wall (all back issues available online up to the most recent three volumes). We strongly encourage you to help convince your library to subscribe via these two services, also."

NASAC National Association of State Aquaculture Coordinators
As a resource for contacts throughout the United States and its territories who are involved in the government administration of aquaculture, NASAC is an important resource, and this includes aquatic animal health issues.  While there are a number of Internet sites about NASAC, the most up to date providing current information about the organization and list of members is http://www.marylandseafood.org/aquaculture/nasac.php.

"October 2006
"The National Association of State Aquaculture Coordinators (NASAC)is an affiliate of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA). The Coordinators are responsible for coordinating aquaculture programs at the State or territorial level. The purpose of NASAC is to promote, to encourage, and to assist the development of aquaculture in the United States by enhancing communication among Federal, State, local and tribal governmental agencies; agricultural research and extension institutions; and trade and marketing organizations. FishDisease.Net
Fishdisease.net "is a web community for aquatic animal health professionals."  "Fishdisease.net is made possible by the support of the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and by the Marine Sciences Research Centre at Stony Brook University."

Its web site www.fishdisease.net lists with addresses, professional biographies, and interests in aquatic animal health those world wide who are signed up to receive its e-mailings (See "User Directory")..  To join the fishdisease email list, a form is provided from Topica to fill out.  The fishdisease.net web site also has links to journals, conferences, courses, documents, equipment, jobs, lab resources, societies, and an "Image Library."  For example, for the list of national and international societies see http://fishdisease.net/fd/links.php?cat=Societies.

[Note:  Apparently, no e-mails have been sent out since Oct. 18, 2005, so it is unclear to what extent the messaging is active.  Do not enter www.fishdiseases.net, which has nothing to do with fishdisease.net, or this subject.  Fishdiseases.net has indications of being host to a virus, according to antivirus software.]

AHS AFS Fish Health Section of the American Fisheries Society
The American Fisheries Society (see http://www.fisheries.org/main/) has had from its beginning more than a century ago a strong interest in fish health and culture, with many publications in this field over the decades. The AFS has an active Fish Health Section (http://web.fisheries.org/units/fhs/) with an informative e-mail newsletter with helpful current news, usually appearing 2-3 or more times per month.

AFS "Fish Health Section Updates" of the Fish Health section of the AFS American Fisheries Society are edited by

"The Fish Health Section (FHS) is one of the largest and most international sections of the American Fisheries Society.  The FHS was formed in 1972 to give fish biologists, diagnosticians, researchers, aquaculturists, veterinarians, administrators, and others involved in fish health, an organization for communication and interaction.

"Goals and Mission:
Maintain an association of persons involved in safe-guarding the health of fish and other aquatic animals.
Focus attention on aquatic animal health issues through research, national and international meetings, education and dissemination of appropriate information to the public.
Encourage effective fish health practices through communication and cooperation with government and private interests.
"Members are informed through:
The Fish Health Newsletter is a quarterly publication, posted on our website, that provides an avenue to report case studies and topics of interest in fish health in a non-peer-reviewed format and informs members of FHS activities.
The Fish Health Update List-serve is distributed electronically and provides members with updates on employment, meetings and workshops, interesting reports of Fish Health in the news, and helpful resources on a more frequent basis.  If you have any suggestions regarding the List-serve, please contact Jerri Bartholomew.
Bluebook - Suggested Procedures for the Detection and Identification of Certain Finfish and Shellfish Pathogens.
Annual meetings and special workshops that provide avenues for discussing and presenting specialties, new ideas and techniques.
The AFS Membership Directory provides a means to contact other AFS members.
"In addition, the Section-sponsored Journal of Aquatic Animal Health reports recent research developments in pathogen characterization, drug and chemical treatments, diagnostic assays, immunization programs and other related subjects.

"The FHS/AFS also offers credentials through certification as Fish Health Inspectors or Fish Pathologists.  The S.F. Snieszko Distinguished Service Award is given to outstanding contributors to the advancement of fish health.

"We invite you to join and participate in the Fish Health Section of the American Fisheries Society.  Affiliate memberships are also available at a reduced rate for those who are members of related professional societies.

One needs to be a member of the AFS American Fisheries Society and its Fish Health section to receive their newsletter on fish health.  This organization is well worth joining, being one of the best sources of current information on the subject for North America that is out there on the Internet, and available through e-mail.  Regular North American dues are $76.00 per year.  Additional section dues for the Fish Health section are $15.00 per year.  Address:  American Fisheries Society, 5410 Grosvenor Lane, Suite 110, Bethesda, MD 20814-2199.  Tel (301) 897-86716, ext. 203, or 224.  E-mail: membership@fisheries.org.

"AquaVetMed" of the American Veterinary Medical Association
"AquaVetMed" edited by "Dr. David Scarfe" <DScarfe@avma.org> of the American Veterinary Medical Association, is a very informative and useful e-newsletter that usually appears several times a week.

"AquaVetMed e-news [provided by e-mailings has] information to veterinary and veterinary-allied subscribers concerning aquatic animal medicine, health, welfare, public health and seafood safety, obtained from a variety of sources (largely AquaVetMed subscribers). While provided by the American Veterinary Medical Association's, Aquatic Veterinary Medicine Committee, and are for public distribution, they do not necessarily reflect the position of the AVMA or the veterinary profession."

"Interested veterinarians or aquatic animal health professionals can subscribe...or contribute pertinent news or information by sending a message with "For AquaVetMed -" and the topic in the subject,
to:  David Scarfe PhD, DVM, MRSSA (DScarfe@avma.org), American
Veterinary Medical Association."

Listed on the Internet for signing on is www.iaaam.org/other_docs/AquaVetMed-Signup-v19(fill-in).rtf.

Also see the new web site www.aquavets.com of the AVMA, which lists veterinarians in aquatic medicine by U.S. State and foreign countries, providing addresses and affiliation.  This is the first time that the AVMA (or anyone else) has provided such a list, first appearing in late 2006. It will no doubt be of genuine help to aquaculturists, and the public.
